The School of Hard Knocks Schooled in Magic Book 5 eBook Christopher Nuttall

I have read the previous books quickly and in a rush, but by the fourth book her ignorance and inability to actually be effective as a magician is starting to become old. There is a reason why no one writes about learning to become something great for a long time. BECAUSE IT IS BORING. Yes, one must learn to walk before they fly, but do we have to go through EVERY single stubbed toe and stumble? I stopped reading book 5 after I found myself reading a paragraph and turning the page because yet again it was talking about her failures to master this or master that. (if I had to read another sentence about how she would never master alchemy I would find the nearest sharp object and shove it in my eye) Or her insecurities. Or her mountains of homework. Or how she did this wrong and screwed up everything. SERIOUSLY? Also her sitting in a chair being lectured by instructors is so overdone I started skipping those pages entirely. This was enjoyable in the beginning, but I think this horse has been beaten enough; there is no more horse and you have now moved on to slamming your head against a post oak because it is supposed to build character. Hopefully I will develop curiosity again after awhile, but I doubt it. Once I put a book down I almost never pick it back up. Shame, this series had so much promise.

The School of Hard Knocks Schooled in Magic Book 5 eBook Christopher Nuttall Reviews

I like this series, I really do. But there is always a point, in every book, that I want to stop reading and just throw the book away. But I push through it and am rewarded by a VERY strong finish. This book was no exception. I put it down for a day or two and read a different book, then resumed and quickly found it hard to put down. Emily goes to the rival magic school to see what it is up to - a kind of clandestine mission thing where she allows herself to be kidnapped to go there. The author does a very good job fleshing out the other school, from students to staff. Also does a great job creating the school - the classroom, hall and grounds. The author did a great job of telegraphing some parts of the plot, so you could see where it was going, but also providing some very good plot twists that made me say either "whoa..." or "oh ho!". As I put the book down, I thought, OK - five books in, I think the author has hit is stride, but then I remembered putting the book down. In any case, I am in until the end. I've purchased the rest of the series. I like the premise and the characters and want to see where this goes. So although I have some issues with the books, I do like them and recommend them.
The books in the Schooled in Magic series continues to be very enjoyable reading, at least for me. In this instalment Emily makes another trip outside of Whitehall but unlike the other such trips she is actually continuing her schooling, as an undercover student to Mountaintop, another school in the Allied Lands.

In one sense this book gives a bit of an alternate view of magic schooling in the Allied Lands in the sense that the way Mountaintop goes about it is rather different from Whitehall. especially perhaps in terms of the social and authoritarian structures and ways at the two schools.

It was quite fun to read about Emily’s new experiences and how she struggled, adapted and made mistakes. As usual the book is full of interesting characters not to mention a mystery or two. As usual Emily’s curiosity, stubbornness and ignorance about a fair amount of things causes her to wander into quite some adventure and make a few mistakes along the way.

I have to say that I was somewhat split at the end since none of the bad guys were really that bad after all. There was a reason they where doing what they were doing and they seemed to rather firmly believe that it was for the best of the Allied Lands. Several of the characters that one would have expected to be some really bad individuals actually came across as rather reasonable a lot of the time. There are really no simple, stereotypic, bad guys (or god guys) in this book.

The ending was not really what I expected I have to say. The secret of Mountaintop was quite nasty indeed. However, at the very end of the book Mr. Nuttall performs some equally nasty cruelty towards the readers by dropping a last minute huge loose thread in the readers lap. Arrrgggghhhhhh !!!!!

Dammit, I would have bought the next one anyway. You just made the wait a lot more painful Mr. Nuttall -)
A solid editon to the Unnamed World. I gave this book four stars due to the fact that Emily seemed to grow less as a character in this novel. While the additon of Mountaintop, Demons, add to the world, there seems little room for Emily as a character. They times when she does that a stand are around issues that Emily has already shown as a character. I agree with an earlier review, that Emily seems to be succeeded by Accident as opposed to Intent. She is a "Child of Destiny" and perhaps this is why she succeeds. We have been told that she has great magic power and potential, but her naivity is starting to wear thin; her lack of confidence and planning seem to say that any wizard that did not take mountaintops oaths could have accomplished the same task. I liked all of the earlier books and I hope the next book shows us a Emily that has more of a backbone, speaks her mind, and has confidence when facing challenges.
